Dear Alana | Monday Invocation

“This is the true story of young people caught between the promise of perfection and the price we pay to belong.”

- Dear Alana, Podcast

Content Warning: Self-harm and/or suicide, Death or dying, Sexism and misogyny, Homophobia and/or Transphobia, Conversion therapy, and ex-gay ministry.

Conversion therapy is often depicted as a coercive practice that many people cannot imagine still exists. The death of Alana Chen by suicide in 2019 after years of conversion therapy highlights a reality that’s often hidden in plain sight. The new face of conversion therapy comes in more insidious forms, cloaked in neo-Freudian theories and religious concepts of “spiritual brokenness.”

In this 2024 Conference Breakout session, the creator and host of the #1 podcast “Dear Alana,” speaks with Eve Tushnet, who’s interviewed dozens of conversion therapy and ex-gay ministry participants. They discuss the narratives behind conversion therapy, and the paths forward to bring awareness and bridge-building to faith spaces.
