For Immediate Release
Today, All Out and Q Christian Fellowship announced the launch of “Help! My Kid Just Came Out!”, a joint online resource to gather and distribute the testimonials of parents worldwide whose kids have come out as LGBTQ+. Featuring interviews recorded by parents in multiple languages, the initiative will help Christian parents struggling to get answers as they navigate vulnerable, pivotal experiences in their child’s coming out.
Research has made plain the consequences non-affirming parent and family relationships can have on LGBTQ+ people, particularly youth. In its 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, The Trevor Project found that LGBTQ youth who felt high social support from their family reported attempting suicide at less than half the rate of those who felt low or moderate social support, and fewer than one in three trans and nonbinary youth consider their home affirming.
“Every word spoken and action taken by a parent when a child comes out is deeply important. Study after study has made clear that lives are at stake,” said Nathanial Green (he/him), Communications Director for Q Christian Fellowship. “By supporting Christian parents and family members of newly-out youth, we can protect the wellbeing of vulnerable LGBTQ+ young people and promote the radical belonging we seek to cultivate in our families as well as in the Church. We are thrilled by the possibilities of this partnership with our friends at All Out, and we prayerfully anticipate the impact it will have on queer youth and their relationships with their parents.”
“Help! My Kid Just Came Out!” builds on Q Christian’s work to empower Christian parents with meaningful resources to fully support their LGBTQ+ child, which studies show can have profound benefits in their mental, physical, and emotional health.
"This is a safe space and an enormous resource where parents and families of LGBT+ children can get the answers and inspiration they need to find peace—answers that can mean the difference between love and hate, even life and death,” said Justin Lessner (he/him), Campaign Manager for All Out.
Launching on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the “Help! My Kid Just Came Out!” campaign will continue receiving submissions and publishing footage, cataloging them for parents in this growing resource.
The full campaign page will be launched with thirty-two videos available across multiple languages, and can be found here.
